Windhoek - description of the city:
Windhoek is a capital of Namibia. The city is located at an altitude of 1650 m above sea level in the mountains of the country. The name of the city is translated from Afrikaans as a «place where the wind blow». However, this is a great exaggeration. The city is considered to be the greenest city in the country, due to the relatively mild climate and the largest amount of precipitation for desert. In the summer time the temperature there rarely rise above 30 degrees, and in winter rarely drops below 7 degrees.
Windhoеk wonderfully combines the spirit of the country`s co;onion past and a dynamic modern city. At one time the city bore the proud title of «German» city of Africa, and now from the colonial provincial town the city became the capital of the country. After German rule there remains excellent architecture, clean streets and fairy high standard of living.
Annals of the city begin from one of the Bantu peoples, who immigrated from southern Africa to territories of Namibia, and in the middle of the 19th century there was founded a Windhoеk settlement. The city became a German colony in 1884s. After World war II the settlement passed into the possession of South Africa. Ib 1990s, after gaining independence of Namibia, Windhoek became the capital of the independence Republic of Namibia. The most attractions apply by the time when the city was subordinate Germany. First of all, it is three magnificent castle built there in the early 20th century. They are built in the style of medieval knights` castles and now each of them has found its application.
In addition to fans historical sights in Windhoek will find something to do who prefer shopping, good restaurants and clubs. Boutiques, shops, and souvenir shops are concentrated mainly in the historic city center on the pedestrian street of Post Street Mal. From Windhoek is bought mainly jewelry with the local diamonds of excellent quality, and carpets.
Usually, life in the city «stops» at 18:00 on workdays. At this time all shops are closed, but on the weekends the city lives up till late night, no free seats in restaurants and cafes, and the streets are ful of people.
