Wellington is the capital of New Zealand, located on the North Island. It was founded in 1840, and became the capital since 1865. Wellington is home to 331 thousand inhabitants. Port capacity is about 15 million tons a year. There is an international airport. Main industries include machine building, metallurgy, wood, paper, light and food industries. There are the University, the Royal Society of New Zealand, the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, the National Gallery of Art, the Carter Observatory, and the National Museum in Wellington. To the north of Wellington, on the Kapiti Island a famous bird sanctuary is situated.
