Walvis Bay - description of the city:
Walvis Bay has always been a harbor because its deep depth of the water at its beaches, which were protected by the Pelican Point. The harbor was only one natural refuge on the coast. Walvis Bay had a reputation of the larges fishing port as well.
Now the city is the main port ant the largest industrial center of Namibia. Walvis Bay lies at 30km. south of Swakopmund.
Attractions of the city are concentrated near the beaches, but it is interesting ti explore such place as the Dune №7-the highest dune in the region.
In the Walvis Bay are lots of whales, hence the name of the city-Walfischbai(in English Whale Bay). Since the begging of the 20th century and till 1960s there were continued a terrible extermination of these mammals. The fight was distributed all over the world, that almost led to the extinction of whales. Fortunately, whaling was stopped and now they are so many than it was before, before the invasion of poachers.
The whole port has a huge variety of birds. There nest more than 50 species of birds, especially prevalent there the graceful pink flamingos(total there live about 70% of flamingos of South Africa),as well as gulls, pelicans, and many others.
In the salt-mining areas of Salt Works can be seen the huge white towers, which were evaporated from the sea water salt. Also in port are numerous oyster farms.
The city specialized in outdoor activities and various extreme sports(as windsurfing, kite surfing, sailing). There are extremely popular special cruises- especially for observation of dolphins and seals, which leave an unforgettable impression, because the animals swim quite close and play with the guests.
