Description of Spain
The Kingdom of Spain is located in the southwest of the European continent and occupies nearly 505,000 square kilometers; is the third largest country in Europe. Spain's population is about 46 million people. The area of the country occupies almost 80% of the Iberian Peninsula. The north and the west of the country are washed by the Atlantic Ocean, the eastern and the southern shores by the Mediterranean Sea. Spain borders with Morocco, France, Andorra, Portugal and the British possession of Gibraltar. Most of Spain is covered by mountains and plateaus that is about 90 % of the country.
Spain is divided into 17 autonomous regions - Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castile-La Mancha, Castile and Leon, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia, La Rioja, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra and two autonomous cities which are in Africa - Ceuta and Melilla.
The climate in Spain varies depending on the area of the country. The central regions of Spain are characterized by a sharply continental climate, with cold winters and hot summers. In winter, temperatures often drop to -15; the average summer temperature is +24. The annual rainfall is about 400 mm. The south regions of the country are characterized by a Mediterranean climate with mild short winters and dry hot summers. The average rainfall ranges from 250 mm to 600 mm. The north regions of the country are characterized by oceanic climate, which is formed over the Atlantic. This area is known for its mild wet winters and warm summers. The average winter temperature is of +9, and the summer one - +18. This is the rainiest region of Spain with an annual rainfall of 800 - 1500 mm. The largest rivers of Spain are the Ebro, the Duero, the Guadalquivir, the Guadiana and the Vale.
