Santo Domingo - description of the city:
Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, was founded in 1496 by the brother of the famous explorer Christopher Columbus, Bartholomew Columbus. Originally the city was called New Isabella, but was later renamed in Santo Domingo, which translated from Spanish means "Holy Sunday". It is believed that the city was founded on this day.
The historic center of Santo Domingo is on the list of the World Heritage Sites.
