SeefeldThis small town, occupying a large sunny plateau, is one of the most attractive places near Innsbruck. It is a smart resort, with elegant shops along a wide promenade, and boasts a variety of attractions. In the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics, Seefeld was the venue for all the Nordic skiing contests, enhancing the town’s prosperity and reputation. The local cross-country skiing trails are the longest in the Alps, measuring some 250 km (155 miles). At the centre of Seefeld stands the huge 15th-century church of St Oswald while at the western end of the town is a chapel built on the orders of Archduke Leopold V to house a crucifix dating from the early 16th century and said to have miraculous powers. The crucifix stands within the altarpiece of this small, circular building with a Renaissance portal and onion dome. Visitors to Seefeld can also enjoy a trip to the casino, one of the largest in Austria. Seefeld Photo Gallery |
