East of Vienna lies the small town of Rohrau, with two attractions: Haydn’s birthplace and the Harrach family castle. The pretty house in which the composer and his brother Michael were born, is now a small museum devoted to both composers. The nearby Harrach castle is one of the most beautiful private art galleries in Austria with a splendid collection of 17th- and 18th-century paintings, mainly from Spain and Naples, but also some work from the Netherlands. There are also interesting porcelain pieces. The castle dates from the 16th century but was rebuilt in the 18th century.
