Larvik, is a city in Norway that was founded in the year 1671. It was founded by Ulrik Fredrik Gyldenlove. Gyldenlove become the first count of the city. You can still visit the castle today. The Treschow estate is located here. This is the home of Mille Marie Treschow, who is the richest woman in Norway. The estate was built during the 1820s. This was during the time when the last count of the city declared bankruptcy.
The museum society of Larvik was founded in the year 1916. The purpose of the society is to preserve and restore the collection of historic buildings in the area. The Treschow-Fritzoe museum offers exhibitions from the previous Treschow-Fritzoe ironworks. The Verkensgarorden has displayes of equipment, tools, models, and drawings that show the iron production age of the city. This era lasted for about 200 years, from 1670 through 1870. The exhibit shows the different aspects of producing iron, from creation through production as well as how the stone larvikite was used. Larvikite is the main export product of the city.
Ulrik Gyldenlove built the Manor House for his 3rd wedding that took place in 1677. The house is a large wooden structure that has baroque interiors that are well preserved. The home is currently filled with antiques from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The maritime museum is located in the oldest brick building of Larvik. The building dates back to 1730. The museum offers displays of paintings of different sailing vessels, models of ships, and other artifacts of the nautical nature. There is an area of the museum devoted to Thor Heyerdahl’s expeditions.
