Bahnhofstrasse Introduction

Bahnhofstrasse is the primary downtown street in Zurich, and it is one of the most exclusive and expensive shopping streets in the whole world. There was a study done, and it was shown that the Bahnhofstrasse was the priciest street for retail shopping in all of Europe, and it was the third costliest in the entire whole world.

It was established when the fortifications of the city were torn down in 1864 and a ditch in the front walls was filled in. Up until that time, the location’s name had been Froschengraben, which translates in English to “Ditch of the Frogs”. It was then renamed Station Street.

Bahnhofstrasse, also called Station Street in English, begins at Bahnhofplatz near the Zurich Hauptbahnhof, and it passes Paradeplatz, Augstinergasse, and Rennweg before it ends right after Burkliplatz. It ends on Lake Zurich Hotel.

The street is mostly used by pedestrians, but it is also a big link in the tram network in Zurich.

There are several dozen shops on the street, and some of them include Cartier, Apple Store, Gucci, Manor, and Prada.

Paradeplatz is one of the most well known squares in all of Switzerland, and it is located near the end of the Bahnhofstrasse nearest to Lake Zurich. The two largest banks in Switzerland, Credit Suisse Group and UBS, are headquartered in this square. Paradeplatz is well known around the world for its chocolate café and shop, Confiserie Sprungli.

Bahnhofstrasse has some of the best shopping in Switzerland, but just because you don’t have the money to buy the most expensive stuff, doesn’t mean you can’t have a great time there. The street is a historic site, and it is interesting enough just to be there and take some photographs. It’s a great place to go window shopping and look around at what is for sale. You can always grab a bite to eat in one of the many eateries and outdoor cafes. It can be really fun to just watch the people passing by as you’re eating and drinking some authentic cuisine. The stores for the fashion brands Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Prada are some of the best stores that those companies have. There is a big difference between going into a Gucci store at your local mall in your neighborhood and visiting one in Bahnhofstrasse. Bahnhofstrasse offers the opportunity to take a day excursion through one of the best shopping areas in all of Switzerland.
