Description of Peru
Peru is the third largest country in South America. The country occupies an area of 1,285,216 square kilometers, where live over 23 million people. As for ethnic composition, it is divided as follows: 50% - the Indians, 35% - the white race and half-breeds, and 15% - the Negros and oriental race. Despite the fact that a large part of the population is the Indians, Peru’s general information warns tourists that the locals should not be called "Indians" aloud because it is considered an insult. Peru shares its borders with Ecuador and Colombia in the north, with Chile in the south, and with Bolivia and Brazil in the east; it is washed by the Pacific Ocean in the west.
The official monetary unit of the country is Nuevo Sol. 1 dollar is approximately 3.5 nuevos soles. Major currencies can be exchanged at banks, which operate from 09:15 to 18:00 (Monday-Friday) and from 09:30 to 12:00 (Saturday). The exchange of old and worn notes can be complicated. As for credit cards, they can serve only in the capital and in major tourist centers.
The official languages are Spanish and Quechua; in some areas other Indian dialects are common. If you speak English, you will be understood in the airport, hotel or travel agency, but in general, is almost never used there.
