On 1 January 2006 the total number of inhabitants, according to official data, was of 4,640,219 people. This allows it to take only the 28th place among the European countries. The population density is 12.1 people per square kilometer. The coastline of the Kingdom of Norway, including fjords and bays, is more than 20,000 kilometers.
Norway's geographical location and characteristics of settlement of the country took part in the development of a large number of local and regional dialects, which are still preserved and play an important role in the country. There are two official written versions of Norwegian, bokmal and nynorsk. Bokmal is based on the Danish-Norwegian language, and has developed on the basis of written Danish adapted to the dialects of Eastern Norway. Nynorsk was created by a linguist Ivar Aasen in the 1850s, based on the dialects of western Norway.
