New South Memphis

New South Memphis - description of the city:

South Memphis is one of the oldest areas of Memphis, Tennessee. It’s an area that extends from downtown all the way to the state line of Mississippi. It was mostly an agrarian region when it first started out. There are a number of well-known neighborhoods in the area like French Fort, Pine Hill, Bunker Hill, Mallory Heights, and Dukeston – and there are dozens of others. A lot of these neighborhoods are the homes of several famous hip musicians, as well as R&B singers. A lot of parts of South Memphis are considered unsafe, however. Some parts of South Memphis are notorious for their violence and crime because of all of the gang activity and poverty in the region. South Memphis is also known for its several churches, including East Trigg Baptist Church, Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Westwood, and Union Valley Baptist Church.

Some of the well-known site sin South Memphis are the Black Arts Alliance, the Graceland mansion, Crystal Palace Skating Rink, Southland Mall, Elmwood, and New Park. South Memphis is also the site of several of the best restaurants in the state, including Four Way Grill, A&R Bar BQ, Daisy’s, Coletta’s, and Jack Pirtle’s Chicken.

There are a number of very important highways that go through South Memphis, including Route 51, 61, 64, and 70.

History & Culture

South Memphis is one of Memphis’s oldest areas, and it has many important landmarks of music history. Stax Records, which is a blues, funk, and soul label, has released records by Booker T., Isaac Hayes, and Otis Redding. Thousands of tourists visit Graceland, Elvis Presley’s former home, each year. They visit there to take a tour of the site and note the accomplishments of the man.

South Memphis is home to Orange Mound, which is the first black neighborhood in the U.S. to be developed by black people. Orange Mound was created in the late 1800s where an old plantation once stood. Churches have always been a big part of the culture in South Memphis, helping to create community leaders and holding together the community.

Memphis, Tennessee was named after a city in Egypt. The average yearly temperature is 62 degrees and the average yearly rainfall is 54 inches.

Tourism in Memphis

There are several notable tourist spots in Memphis, including Graceland (the home of Elvis Presley), Beale Street, parks, fine art galleries, and art museums. If you’re visiting Memphis for the first time, or just getting a feel for the city, there are some places that you shouldn’t miss on your vacation to Memphis. There are a number of amazing attractions in the area, but we’re going to list some of the very best things to do here.

Art Museums

The oldest and biggest fine art museum in Tennessee, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, is a highly trafficked tourist spot. If you visit downtown Memphis, you can see the Peabody Place Museum, which has the biggest collection of 19th-century Chinese art in the United States.

Food & Dining

Eating in New South Memphis is an experience not to be forgotten. Eating in the city is a delight for the soul – not for the whole body. From real South cooking to friendly faces to cooks that have been working their magic for decades, you’ll have a truly satisfying experience when you eat at one of Memphis’s many historic restaurants. Memphis has a specialty in barbecue, and there are some really unique and special places to get the world’s best barbecue. You’re not going to get it at the big chain restaurants and franchises. There’s usually only one location for the restaurants you’re going to find the best barbecue at. Barbecue secrets are passed down from grandmothers to sons to their sons, and you’ll taste some of the most savory, delicious, juicy, and mouthwatering barbecue the world has to offer when you get it in Memphis.

Memphis restaurants don’t just serve barbecue, though. You can get sushi, steak, seafood, and just about anything else you can get in any other American town. The difference is that Memphis restaurant owners value taste and deliciousness perhaps a little more than others, and you’re going to have the opportunity to eat some of the finest-tasting food that the country has to offer. From juicy, delicious burgers to real Mexican and Greek food, as well as international cuisine from some of the leading chefs in the world, there is a reason that Memphis is known as a food capital of the South.

You can choose from a wide selection of museums and performing arts centers in Memphis. There are Broadway shows in Memphis, too. Broadway shows stop in Memphis on their national tours. A lot of the shows stop at the famous Orpheum Theatre. The city has its own theater company, as well. The city even has its own award-winning professional ballet company, symphony orchestra, and opera. Don’t forget to visit the museums. Some of the museums have fine art, and others let you listen to stunning music and some just celebrate Memphis culture & heritage, but each one of them does their part to introduce you to Memphis culture.

Have a Good Time With the Whole Family

You can make your trip to Memphis a fun time for the whole family – from your littlest toddler to your elderly grandfather. You can check out the Children’s Museum and the march of the Peabody ducks (both great ideas for the kids), bison-watching and picnicking (great for the older kids and adults), and you can check out the Memphis Zoo to see animals that you won’t find hardly anywhere else in the world. You can also take a relaxing riverboat cruise with your significant other and dine on the riverboat after you watch sun go down. What could be more romantic than a romantic riverboat cruise?

The Mississippi River

The second longest river in the country runs right through Memphis. It’s also the biggest river by volume. The Mississippi River acts as the western border of Memphis, and it’s sometimes why Memphis is called “Bluff City” and “The River City”. The Mississippi River banks offer almost five miles of parks that are ideal for outdoor activities. Moreover, other water activities, such as canoe rentals and riverboat cruises are available.

The National Civil Rights Museum

The National Civil Rights Museum is a very important facility that highlights some of the struggles that people had to go through in their fight for civil rights in the South. The museum is located in the Lorraine Motel, which is the motel where Martin Luther King, Jr. was fatally shot. This museum has a special focus and an important historical significance, and that is what draws in thousands of visitors from around the world each year.

Graceland is the former home of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley, and it is one of the most visited mansions in the United States (it’s just behind the White House), and it attracts more than 600,000 national and international visitors each year.

Beale Street

If you’re a fan of the blues, then you’ll love Beale Street. This is where B.B. King once played his guitar. He sometimes shows up at the club that has his name, and he has a partial ownership stake in it. There are street performers that play live music, clubs and bars that have live entertainment 24/7 and a whole lot more to keep you entertained.

Beale Street was the most visited tourist attraction in Tennessee in 2008, and it is thought to be the second busiest avenue in the South, after Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Memphis Zoo

The Memphis Zoo is situated in midtown Memphis, and it has several exhibits of amphibians, fish, birds, and mammals from all across the globe. Some of the most popular exhibits include the Northwest Passage, with an awesome Polar Bear exhibit, the Teton Trek, and the panda exhibit. There are only a small bunch of pandas in the United States, and the Memphis Zoo has many of them.

Mud Island River Park

Mud Island River Park is situated on Mud Island in downtown Memphis. The Park has a great reputation for its River Walk. The River Walk is a working model of the lower Mississippi River.

The Walk has a distance of about half a mile, and it allows visitors to actually walk in the water and look at models of bridges and cities along the way. The Gulf of Mexico section one part of a waterpark called Bud Boogie Beach. The museum has 18 galleries of history from the region, and it is a replica of a riverboat from the Civil War inside.

Splendid Sunsets

There’s nothing quite like watching a sunset go down on the Mississippi River as the riverboats pass by.

Bike Routes

Cyclists can now really enjoy biking in Memphis, because there are more than 60 miles of streets for shared, on-road roadway bike tours. There is one longer Memphis tour and five neighborhood tours. If you’re in the town with your family, consider renting some bikes and taking a long bicycle tour of Memphis. There’s no better way to get to know the city than to explore it on bikes. These routes are meant for recreation, as well as to provide a way to commute and link up neighborhoods, city attractions, and commercial areas. There are many destinations along the bike tour that include the Memphis riverfront, gardens, museums, the Memphis Zoo, and the Lichterman Nature Center. You can also visit the Greenline, which his a 7-mile paved pedestrian cycling trail that connects the middle of midtown to Shelby Farms.

If you’ve never visited Memphis before, now is the time to see it. There’s nothing more beautiful than a gorgeous sunset over the Mississippi River. Take your whole family to see the beautiful scenery, attractions, and sights of Memphis soon. It’s one of the most down-to-earth towns in the South. It’s a great place to create family memories.

Sun Studio

Sun Studio was once the home of many recording artists like Ike Turner, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley. It still acts as a recording studio to this day, but it’s also a tourist attraction for people who love music from all over the world. You can take a tour of this National Landmark, because there are tours given throughout the day, so there are a lot of chances to visit.

The Rendezvous Restaurant

Memphis is well known for its amazing barbecue. We covered that before. Its melt-in-your-mouth barbecue is world-class and one-of-a-kind. What we didn’t tell you was where to get the best barbecue in the city of Memphis. The most famous barbecue restaurant is called the Rendezvous Restaurant. It’s been in business since before 1950, and it has been featured in national news stories, movies, and novels, too. Furthermore, a lot of celebrities have been known to eat there. Even dignitaries and diplomats have eaten there. It’s a famous barbecue restaurant for a reason – it’s got the best barbecue in the city.

Memphis has some of the most down-to-earth, yet fun and exciting, attractions in the United States. If you have a choice of what Deep South hotspots to visit, be sure to check out Memphis – if only for its barbecue and riverboat cruises. You’ll get a real sense of appreciation for the Deep South.
