Netherlands is a kingdom of tulips and windmills. It is an ancient and beautiful land reclaimed from the North Sea. Thousands of kilometers of dikes protect the land from the water element. The royal motto written on the National Emblem says, - "Je maintiendrai" (that means "I’ll withstand").
The official language is Dutch. In Friesland Frisian is spoken; the local dialect in the province of Limburg is also notable. Almost everyone in the Netherlands speak English quite well, some difficulties can arise only in the rural areas. Many inhabitants of the Netherlands also speak German and French. The country’s monetary unit is Euro. Banks are open on weekdays from 9.00 to 16.00. Some banks close on Fridays one hour earlier. Currency exchange in Amsterdam is also carried out by the organization of "GWK". Most "GWK" exchange offices are located near railway stations. They are open from 8:00 to 20:00 every day except Sunday; on Sundays are open from 10.00 to 16.00. You can also exchange money in post offices.
Netherlands is the only country in the world, where the use of soft drugs, which are sold to all adults in cafe-shops, is legally permitted.
