Description of Luxembourg
Luxembourg’s official Name is Great Duchy of Luxembourg, and is located in Western Europe. It shares borders with Belgium, Germany, and France. It occupies an area of 2586 square kilometers that is about three and a half of Kiev. It has a population of 425.000 citizens. There are only 290 thousand of native Luxembourgers in the country, other 130 thousand are foreigners. Most of them are the Portuguese, Italians, but also there are a lot of other Europeans and representatives of the Third World. The average density of population is about 164 people per square kilometer. Life expectancy is about 76 years. Population growth is of 1.4 percent. The birth rate (per 1,000 people) is 11.1; the mortality rate (per 1,000 people) is 9.3.
The capital of the country is Luxembourg (78.300 people). The largest cities are Diekirch (32,000 people), Esch (24,000 people), and Klervo. Among prominent places and monuments of Luxembourg there are the Gothic Cathedral of Notre Dame (18th century), the Grand Ducal Palace, and others.
The country’s territory is dominated by hills. The climate is mild, passing from maritime into continental. The average January temperature is 0-2 C, in July 18 C. The annual rainfall ranges from 700-1000 mm. There are two main rivers in the country: the Moselle and the Sur River (which form the eastern border of the country). These rivers belong to the basin of the river Moselle. Approximately 1/3 of the duchy’s territory is occupied by oak and beech forests. They are located in Oesling and in the northern part of Gutland. The south of the country, with its green pastures, is called Bon Pays (which means "good land").
