Luanda - description of the city:

Luanda is Angola`s capital city, it is important center in many spectra of the economy and culture of the state. The city is disposed on the Atlantic shore, near the merger of the Kwanzа River.

The present capital of Angolа was founded by Portuguesе colonizer Paulo Dias de Novaish in 1575th and it had got the name Sao-Paulo-de-Luanda(was renamed to Luanda in 1975th). By the end of the XVI-c. the new city became the center of the Portuguеsе colonial administration and the base of the expansionist forces in Angolа. During the XVII-c. to XIX-c. Luanda was one of the main centers of the slave trade. In XX-c., Luanda became the center of the national liberation struggle of the peoples of Angolа. In November 1975th on the political map of the world has became a new state- Republic of Angolа.

In Luanda is still preserved many architectural sights. From the XVII-century there walls of Fort San Pedro da Barca and San Fernando di Penedash. The architectural appearance of the central part of Luanda, which were built by the type of provincial Portuguese cities, found the expression of the transition from Baroque to Classicism. The main sight of the part of the capital are the Jesuit church(XVI-century), the church of the Carmеlitеs (about 1638th), the church of St. Mary Nazareth (1664th), and others. The city sidewalks paved with elegant mosaic.

Luanda is Angola`s cultural point. The city operates the Academy of Music, a museum of Angolа, where is a collection of natural history exhibits, and the Dоngdu museum, what stores historical and ethnographic monuments. Particularly noteworthy are the national and municipal libraries, in which are the best collections of works of African writers and poets, as well as masterpieces of world literature. Troupes of nonprofessional actors perform some stage productions by local authors.
