Lagos - description of the city:

Lagоs is the largest tourist city of Nigeria. It is the main economic and cultural center of the country. Location of the city on the islands and the shore line of the Gulf of Benin of the Atlantic Ocean.

Formerly Yoruba tried lived in this territory. The name of the city was given by Portuguese sailors, who landed there in the XV century and opened a market slave trade, which was banned by King Oba Akitoe in the XIX century. The district was a British Colony from 1861s. Since October 1960s, when Nigeria gained independence, begins a rapid development of the country. Lagos became a metropolis almost equal of territory to the Lagos State.

Lagos has a diverse flora and fauna. Wetlands and mangrove forests are in the north of the city. In local swamps are lots of crocodiles, snakes, monkeys. On the other hand there are endless ocean sandy beaches, crystal clear water, lots of fish, which are easy to learn under the water. All it is the southern coast.

Due to the fact that Lagos is a major trade center, which is in the list of tourist destination, there is very well developed transport sector. In the city successfully operate the food, textile, cement, wood and metal processing companies. In the vicinity of Lagos are cocoa is grown, collected wild fruits and juice of Hevea. The presence of lakes, rivers and ocean coastline gave impetus to the development of fisheries. Lagos is the business, industrial, trade, economic, educational, and tourist center of African Nigerian life. The city is also a center os film industry in Nigeria. There is the National Theatre. In Lagos are lots of hotels of high comfort.

Among the attractions is a huge Oshodi market. It is a «sea» of buyers and sellers. Every day up to 4 million people pass through this place, located at the crossroads, where the number of bus routes and the railway station of the capital. Nigerian National Museum in Lagоs contains a rich collection of art objects of almost all historical periods of the country.
