Description of Japan
Japan is an island country, skirting the eastern part of Asia. Japan consists of more than 3,000 large and small islands, the largest of which are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. The total area is of 377,864 square kilometers. Situated in the tectonically active zone, the country abounds in natural hot springs, and is subject to frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Seas and the ocean, washing all around the territory of the country, form many natural bays and coves. Japan is divided into eight regions - Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu.
Geographical location: Japan is located in the western part of the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of East Asia. The archipelago consists of four thousand islands. The four largest, Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku, are now connected by bridges and tunnels. In addition to this, the islands of Ryukyu, Bonin and Volcano also form part of Japan. The archipelago is bordered in the north by the Sea of Okhotsk, in the east and south-east by the Pacific Ocean, and in the west by Japan and East China Seas. In the south, between the islands of Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku, the Seto Inland Sea is situated.
Monetary unit: The national monetary unit of the country is the Japanese yen. Japan is the country with the lowest, among all the countries of the world, number of different types of bank-notes. There are only three types of bank-notes in common use: with a face value of 10.000, 5.000 and 1.000 yen, and coins with a face value of 500, 100, 50, 10, 5 and 1 yen.
Currency exchange: It is advisable to share large amounts of money on arrival at the airport, as the hotel does not change more than $ 300 per person per day, and the banks’ exchange procedure is complicated with bureaucratic formalities. You can pay by major credit cards (remember that in some restaurants credit cards are not accepted). On weekdays, banks are usually open from 9 to 15. Banks are also open from 9 to 12 on the first and last Saturday of the month. They are closed on Sundays.
