The capital of Germany is Berlin. The country is home for 81.5 million people. It is washed by the Baltic and North Seas in the north. Germany is a member of the European Union, NATO, International Monetary Fund, WTO, OSCE, and a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Germany’s relief includes medium-altitude mountains, the North German plain, the Swabian-Bavarian Elevation of the Alps. The medium-altitude mountains of Germany (its height overpass 1000 m above sea level) is a part of a broad mountain arc, which connects central France and central Poland. In the south, the Bavarian plateau extends to the northern mountain ranges of the Alps. The highest point of the country is the Mount Zugspitze (2963 m above sea level). On the border of Germany and Switzerland, the country's largest lake, Lake Constance, through which flows the Rhine, is situated. The longest European river Danube originates in the mountains of Germany called Black Forest.
The relief of Germany increases from north to south. In the south, the Bavarian plateau is bordered by high mountain ranges of the Alps. The highest peak of the Alps is located on the border of Italy and France, called Mont Blanc (altitude of 4808 m). In the north of the country, there is the North German plain, with its moraine hills and patches of outwash terrain; to the south of the plain, there are elevations, low and medium-altitude mountains (600 – 1400 m), the Rhenish Slate Mountains, the Harz, the Bohemian Forest, the Black Forest, the Sumava, and others.
