Central African RepublicDescription of Central African RepublicCentral African Republic is located in the center of Africa. The country shares borders with Chad, Cameroon, South Sudan, Sudan, Republic of Congo, and Democratic Republic of Congo. Until the early part of the 1800s the people of Central African Republic lived in the Sudanic zone of the continent and did not have a lot of contact with those outside of the area. Muslim traders started to penetrate the area during the first part of the 19th century and relationships with local leaders were developed and trade and settlement began in the region. When Muslims first arrived in the area it was quite peaceful. However, after the year 1850 slave traders penetrated the region with soldiers who were well-armed. During the late 19th century, European penetration began. During what is sometimes referred to as the scramble for Africa, Belgium, France, and Britain all competed in order to establish a claim on territory located in the central African area. In the year 1889, France created a post located on the Ubangi River located at Bangui. This was to become the capital of CAR. The French colony was named Ubangi Shari. On the first of December in the year 1958 Ubangi-Shari took the name of Central African Republic and became an autonomous territory. Barthelme Buganda, the founding father of the area, died in 1959 in a mysterious plane accident. This was 8 days before the last colonial era elections. CAR gained independence on August 13th, 1960. Since this time there have been several coups including a time where the area was under control of Jean-Bedel Bokassa, who was a self-declared emperor. There is periodic violence from several groups of rebels. This remains one of the most unstable, lawless, and dangerous nations in the world. Visiting Central African RepublicIt is important to note that in March of 2013, Bangui, which is the capital city of the country, was taken over by jihadist rebels.
