Cairo - description of the city:
Cairo (Arabic: al-Qāhira - «victorious") is the capital of Egypt and the largest city in Africa. Egyptians themselves often call it Masr. It is a noisy and dirty metropolis, which won the fame of Arab Rome for the huge number of ancient monuments and the same number of tourists.
Entertainment, excursions and places of interest in Cairo:
Islamic Cairo is a big market, insolently occupying almost the all medieval city. The most "tourist" quarter is a market of the Khan al-Khalili near the Al-Azhar Mosque, famous for shoes cleaners, cats and fake gold. The most popular Mosque is the Sultan Hassan Mosque.
The Cairo TV Tower (Burj al-Qahira, tel.: +20 (0) 2 738 37 90, Zamalek) with a restaurant on the top floor is the funniest attraction of Cairo. All the waiters here are dressed in pharaohs´ suits.
Other places of interest include the Mosques of Amr, Ibn Tulun, al-Azhar al-Hakim, al-Guyushi, al-Akmar, al-Salih al-Talai, Sultan Baybars, al-Muayada, Kite-Bey, Sinan Pasha, and of Muhammad Ali. Also there are the Mausoleum al-Shafi'I; the Mosque, Mausoleum and Madrasah of Sultan Kalaun; the Mosque, Mausoleum and Madrasah of Sultan Hassan; and houses of Al Gury, Zaynab Khatun, Gamal al-Din al-Dhahabi and Emir Ridwan Bey.
