Zamboanga - description of the city:

Zamboangа is a tourist popular town in the Philippinеs, which is located on the island of Mindanаo in the southern endpoint of the Zаmboanga Pеninsula. On the west the city is bordered by Sulu Sea, in the south-by Sulawesi sea and Bazil strait, in the east-by Gulf of Moro.

In the early thirteenth century on the site of the modern city there was a Hambangan settlement, which means «City of Flowers» on the locals language. The first population of these places were Malays from the Sulu island and natives from the Malay Peninsula. In the fifteenth c. there began to spread Islam, and Hambangan became a part of Sultanate of Jolo. When on the banks of Mindanao where Spaniards have appeared, they had to fight desperately with local Muslims. In the 1635th for protection from raids of Molo pirate, at the south tip of the island there was built the San Jose fortress, which has given rise to the modern Zаmboanga city.

Today Zamboanga is dynamically developing city, the center of agriculture and fishing. There are the sea port, shipyards, and a major international airport.Tourists come here to see by their eyes the greatest works of architecture, some of which is several hundred years old, and to see the evidences of the former military power of the city, and wonderful nature of these places. In 2005th the city was visited by nearly half a million visitors.

One of the main sights of Zаmboanga is the Pilar Fort. It was created by the Spanish in the beginning of 17th century and became a national cultural sight in 1973th. Today into its walls housed a branch of the National Museum of the country. Other military facilities, which are preserved in the city, are small barracks. There housed the American garrisons in 1899th.

The area of Zamboanga includes closest small islands, which are located off the coast of the town. The most popular island is the Santa Cruz island, which has long become a favorite vacation spot for residence and guests of Zаmboanga. It attracts tourist by its amazing beaches with pink sand. Other interesting place is Yellow beach, located at 8 km west of the town.
