Vilnius has the Academy of Sciences of Lithuania, 5 universities (including the University and the Conservatory), 5 theaters (including the Lithuanian Opera and Ballet House), a lot of museums, among which the most notable are the Historical and Ethnographic Museum, the Art Gallery, and the Folk Art Museum. Vilnius is one of the most beautiful cities of the former Soviet Union. Among the architectural monuments can be marked out the remains of the Upper Castle (14 – 15th centuries), the old town with its buildings of the 15-18th centuries, the Cathedral and the Town Hall (18th century), the St. Anne’s Church (16th century), and the St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church (17th century). The city is remarkable not only in ancient architecture. The most interesting example of modern architecture is a residential quarter Lazdynai (finished in 1973).
