Tunis

Tunis - description of the city:

Tunis is the capital of Tunisia, the administrative center of Tunisian vilayet. It is a port on the Mediterranean coast, located just southwest of where in the 9th century B.C. was founded the Phoenician city of Carthage, which with the lapse of time became the center of the forceful trading power with extensive holdings in the most remote parts of the Mediterranean. In 146 B.C. Carthage was destroyed by the Romans. About this time, apparently, they had founded Tunis. At the end of the 7th century, the city was captured by the Arabs. In the 13-16th centuries, it was the capital of an Arab state Hafsid, then became part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1881-1956, Tunis was the administrative center of the French protectorate; since 1956 - the capital of independent Tunisia.

Currently, it is home to 1.8 million inhabitants (including suburbs). There is an international airport. Tunis is the main economic and cultural center of the country. Main industries include textile, cement, chemical, food processing, and metal industry. The city is the center of arts and crafts. There is a University, the Bardo National Museum, and the Museum of Islamic Art. Landmarks consist of the Gates (13th century), the remains of the walls of the citadel, the Great Mosque (8th century; rebuilt in the 9th century), the Al-Ksar Mosque (12th century), the Minaret (17th century), the mosque of al-Hawa (1st half of the 13th century) and others; the religious complex of the 15th century, palaces of the 18th - 19th centuries, and markets. To the north-east of the city, there are archaeological excavations of ancient Carthage. Here were found the remains of the city walls, the port and the Temple of Phoenician deity Melqart that existed here long before the founding of the city. There are more recent finds from the time when the city was rebuilt by the Romans. A circus, an amphitheater and a Christian basilica were preserved from this period.
