Tehran - description of the city:

Tehran is the capital of Iran, located in the southern foothills of the mountain range Alborz at the height of 1100-1300 m above sea level. It is the administrative center of the Tehran Province. The city was founded, probably, in the 9th century as a small settlement near the ancient Persian city of Rey. The first mention of Tehran as a city dates back to the 12th century. In the end of the 18th century it became the capital of Iran. The city has 7 million inhabitants. There is an international airport. Tehran has more than one third of the industrial production of Iran. Main industries include machinery, petroleum, cement, textile, chemical and food industries. It is famous for domestic crafts. There are universities, theaters and museums. Since 1894 the Art Museum is situated in the Golestan Palace (late 18-19th centuries). Other architectural monuments of the city also date back to 18-19th centuries. Among them, the most interesting are the Shah and the Sepahsalar Mosques. The remains of the ancient and medieval city of Rey with a tower mausoleum of Togrul Beg (12th century) are can be found near Tehran.

During the Second World War in November 1943, a conference took place in Tehran, which was attended by the heads of the allies: the United States (Franklin Roosevelt), USSR (Joseph Stalin) and the United Kingdom (Winston Churchill). Decisions on combined operations against Germany, on the opening of a second front in Europe, and on post-war borders were made. In addition, the Soviet Union pledged to enter the war against Japan after the surrender of Germany.
