Tallinn

Tallinn - description of the city:

Tallinn is the capital of Estonia and a port on the Baltic Sea. The city dates back to 1154 (in Russian chronicles is known as Kolyvan, in Livonian chronicles - Lyndanisse). In 1219-1917, it had the official name of Revel. When in 1561 the city became part of Sweden, it was the largest Baltic port, according to trading turnover, bigger enough than Stockholm. In the 17th century, Revel was a place of a big part of the Russian-Swedish trade. As a result of the Northern War of 1700-1721 the town was annexed to Russia. In 1918, it became the capital of Estonia. In 1973, the first joint Soviet-Swedish conference of historians took place in Tallinn. The city currently has 502 000 inhabitants. Main industries include metal, heavy machinery, instrumentation, manufacturing of electrical equipment, radio equipment, oil equipment, shipbuilding, chemical and pharmaceutical, woodworking, cellulose-paper, printing, light, and food industry. Tallinn has the Academy of Sciences of Estonia, 4 institutes of higher education (including the Conservatory), 5 theaters (including the Opera and Ballet Theatre "Estonia"), 19 museums (Historical Museum, Maritime Museum, Museum of Nature, Park-museum of Folk Architecture, the memorial museum of Anton Tammsaare and Eduard Vilde, the house-museums of Eno Raud and Friedebert Tuglas, and others). Tallinn is divided in Vyshgorod and the Lower Town. Vyshgorod is known for the Castle (13-16th centuries) and the Gothic St. Mary’s Cathedral (13-15th centuries). The Lower Town has the Town Hall (14-15th centuries), the Large Guild (15th century), and Gothic churches of St. Olaf (15 – early 16th centuries), St. Nicholas (13-15th centuries) and the Church of the Holy Ghost (14th century), fortifications (14-16th centuries), numerous houses (15-18th centuries), and the Kadriorg Palace (18th century).
