Spanish Town - description of the city:

Spanish Town is located in the depth of the island of Jamaica. For a long time, from 1692 to 1872, this city was the capital of the island. From the new capital, Kingston, the city is located about 20km. Probably, Spanish Town is in a lucky place, because it is not affected by natural disasters. Due to this in Spanish Town are lots of preserved buildings of the early colonial and Victorian architecture. There can be seen such attractions as the Rodney Memorial, Cathedral of St. Catherine, the royal house.

Spanish Town was founded in 1534, When, after the capture of Jamaica by the British the capital moved to Port Royal, Spanish town became just a big  city, not without aristocracy.  The modern history of the city is quite unattractive. There is the largest prison on the island. A few years ago, in Spanish Town was a real war for influence between various steer gangs. There was a lot of fire and bloodshed. This problem arose because of the lack of jobs and a large number of different weapons in the hands of local residence. The Government of Jamaica specifically for Spanish Town has developed a program «Weapons in exchange for education». Now the city is much calmer, the residence were able to study and find a job.

Jamaica is a country of eternal summer and golden beaches. Spanish Town is located far enough from the coast, so there are no beaches, but the greens in abundance. There all cares and problems can be forgotten. Tourists can plunge into bosom of the unspoiled nature. Most of the island are jungles, savannah, and mangroves. About 20% of the island is covered by forests, suburbs of Spanish Town is no exception. On the banks of the rivers are rising «gallery» of the forest.

In the vicinity of Spanish Town lives a large number of reptiles and amphibians, most of which are anywhere else in the world do not occur. Rivers are huge number of rare fishes.
