Soviet War Memorial (Tiergarten) Description

There are several different war memorials in Berlin, and the well-known Soviet War Memorial (Tiergarten) is just one of them. It is located in the capital city of Germany, Berlin. It was erected by the USSR to commemorate the fallen soldiers of World War II, especially the 80,000 men of the Soviet Armed Forces that died in the Battle of Berlin in the spring of 1945.

The memorial is in GroBer Tiergarten, which is a big public park just west of the city centre.

The memorial was set up in 1945, with a couple of months of the city being captured. Some of the earliest photographs of the site show it in the middle of ruins. Tiergarten was completely destroyed by bombs and then stripped down for firewood and timber during the final months of World War II. Woodlands surround it today. Even though the memorial stood in the British area of Berlin, the Allied Forces supported its creation. During the Cold War, Soviet honor guards from East Berlin were sent to keep watch over the memorial.

The Design Of The Soviet War Memorial

It was built in a style sort of akin to other World War II monuments in the Soviet Union at the time. These kinds of monuments were once seen all over the Eastern bloc. The memorial has the shape of a curved stoa, topped by a big statue of a Soviet soldier. The memorial is set in a garden with a beautiful landscape and design, and tanks and two artillery pieces flank it. There is an outdoor museum behind the memorial that shows photographs of the construction of the memorial, and it has a guide to other memorials in the city of Berlin. There is a big Cyrillic inscription written underneath the statue of the soldier, and it praises the Soviet soldiers that stood up to the German fascist invaders. The Soviets designed the statue with the soldier’s arm in a specific position to symbolize the Red Army’s taking down Nazi Germany.

The State Of The Memorial Today

The memorial is an active site of commemoration to this today. On May 8th, the anniversary of VE Day, there are wreath-laying ceremonies at the memorial. War veterans from countries of the former Soviet Union make a pilgrimage there. It is a site that tourists go to fairly frequently, too. It is a lot closer to the city center than the bigger Soviet War Memorial.

There is a sign by the memorial that explains that the memorial is a burial site for a couple of thousand Russian, German, and English soldiers. It is located right in the center of Berlin, along one of the big roads with a clear sight of the Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag, and they are both symbols of Berlin. A portion of the marbled that went into building the monument came from government buildings nearby that were destroyed, and it is built on the site of a place that was special to Adolf Hitler. He had chosen it as the site of renewal of the German capital after a victory in World War II. Needless to say, he never declared victory. So, the site is now the location of a Soviet war memorial.

Soviet War Memorial (Tiergarten) Tourism

The Soviet War Memorial is located in the Tiergarten between the Siegessaule and the Brandenburg Gate. It is one of the 100 most popular tourist attractions in Berlin. Most people rated it “excellent” and “very” good on a major travel/tourism site.
