Sokode

Sokode - description of the city:

Sokode is among the biggest cites of Togo, second only to the capital, Lome. It is on the Tchaoudjo and Centrale Region in the middle of the nation. The number of people here is more than a hundred thousand inhabitants. Geographically, Sokode is in between two rivers. The city is also a central area for regional agricultural activity. The place is a melting pot of peoples and cultures, but most of those who live here follow the muslim religion.

A year in Sokode can be halved into two seasons: dry and wet. In the season of rainfall, the amount of rain in each year is usually over one thousand millimeters. The number of days when it rains is usually in between one hundred days and one hundred thirty days. Overall, the climatic conditions in Sokode are of a tropical designation.

Distance above sea level of this city is approximately three hundred forty metres. It is comfortably located in between the sea and the desert. As the city is not quite in the desert itself, farming and agriculture can happen here, and these activities fuel commerce and economic activity. A variety of crops are grown in Sokode by the farmers and field workers who work here.

In this city there is a rich presence of culture and tradition. This can be shown in the lavish festivals celebrated here by the local people. The Kotokolli festival in particular lasts for an entire three days, for the purpose of thanking ancestral figures, as well as initiation ceremonies.
