Sofia - description of the city:

Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria, located on the southern edge of the Sofia valley. The city is the administrative center of the Sofia region, the self administrative unit. It was founded in the 1st century A.D. by the Romans on the site of the Thracian settlement and was called Serdica. In the 2nd century A.D., it had the status of a colony and the right to mint its own coins. In the 3rd century A.D., it represented the capital of the Roman province of Dacia Mediterranean. In 447, Serdica was destroyed by the Huns, but later rebuilt in the 6th century by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian. In 809, it became part of the First Bulgarian Empire under the name of Sredets. Since the end of the 14th century is called Sofia (after the church of St. Sophia). From 1382 till early 1878, the city was under the Ottoman yoke. Since 1879 it became the capital of Bulgaria.

Currently Sofia is home to 1.38 million inhabitants. There are a transport interchange and an international airport. Sofia includes approximately the sixth of the total Bulgarian industrial production: diverse engineering (electrical, electronic, machine and instrumental industry, etc.), metals, chemicals, rubber, pulp and paper, food-processing and light industry. The city has the Academy of Sciences of Bulgaria, the University and theaters. Museums: the National and City Art Gallery, the Archaeological Museum. Moreover, there is the Botanical Garden, the Museum of Botany, and the Zoology Museum at the zoo. Architectural monuments include the ruins of the church of Hagia Sophia (6th century), the Turkish mosque (16th century), and the Memorial Church of Alexander Nevsky, built in honor of the Russian soldiers who died in the war for the liberation of Bulgaria from the Turkish authorities. There are a lot of numerous modern public buildings and apartment complexes in the city. Among the latter is the hotel building, designed by renowned Japanese architect Kisho Kurakava. The National Park is situated on the Mount Vitosha, near Sofia. Excavations of Roman antiquities are held on the territory of the capital.
