Seoul - description of the city:

Seoul is the capital of the Republic of Korea, located on the Han River, 90 km from its confluence with the Kanhvaman Gulf in the Yellow Sea. It is a self administrative unit (given the same status of the province). The city originated in the early Middle Ages. It was the capital of Korea in the times of the Ly Dynasty (1392-1910). After the annexation of Korea by Japan, it was the seat of the Japanese governor-general (1910-1945). Seoul has 10.6 million inhabitants. Together with the city of Incheon (Seoul’s marine outer harbor) forms the main economic region of ​​the country (about half of industrial production). There is an international airport and a subway. Main industries include automobile, metallurgy, electronic, electrical, chemical, textile, food, paper, leather, printing industry, and production of building materials. The city has several universities. The National Museum of Modern Art is situated in the Deoksugung Palace (16th century). Other architectural monuments consist of the Hyo-Myo pagoda of the Popchong temple (1085), the Gyeongbokgung Palace complex, consisting of numerous ceremonial and residential buildings separated by courtyards and parks (1394, destroyed in 1592, rebuilt in the 19th century), the National Museum, the Changdeokgung palace (1404; destroyed in 1592, rebuilt in the 17th century), and the Changgyeonggung palace (15-17th centuries). The XXIV Olympic Games took place in Seoul in 1988.
