Seattle

Seattle - description of the city:

Seattle has a unique cultural importance in the United States. Seattle is a city on the West coast in the state of Washington. It has a population of approximately 650,000, and it is the biggest city in the Pacific Northwest, and it is the fastest-growing city in the U.S. The metropolitan area of Seattle has a population of almost 3.6 million people, and it is in the top 15 biggest metropolitan areas in the United States. Seattle is a huge trade gateway with Asia, and it is one of the biggest ports in the United States. It is a top ten port in North America in terms of the number it containers it handles.

The area where present-day Seattle is has had Native Americans living there for a minimum of 4,000 years before the first European settlers set up permanent settlements there. A man named Denny Party arrived in the area of present-day Seattle in 1851. The settlement was named Seattle after a local Indian chief called Chief Si’ahl.

The first big industry in Seattle was logging, but the city quickly turned into a major shipbuilding and commercial center, as a link to Alaska throughout the Klondike Gold Rush. Seattle had become one of the top 25 biggest cities in the country by 1910. The Great Depression had a very negative effect on the economy of the city, however. After World War II, the economic growth returned, and it was partially because of Boeing setting up an aircraft manufacturing center there. The city turned into a technology hub in the 1980s, with companies like T-Mobile, Microsoft, and Amazon.com setting up their home bases there. There was an economic revival that happened because of the influx of new Internet and software companies in the city. In the ten years between 1990 and 2000, the population increased by 50,000 people. The population increase was attributable to the economic growth, at least partially. Since that time, Seattle has become a major hub for the green movement and as a sustainable development model city.

Seattle has a very notable musical history. In the first half of the 20th century, the city was a major jazz hub. The jazz scene launched the careers of several notable jazz musicians like Ernestine Anderson, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, and others. Seattle is also where Jimi Hendrix was born, and it is where the alternative rock genre grunge first took off. Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana, still has quite a reputation in the city.
