San Diego was the historic home of the Kumeyaay people, and it was the first place visited by European settlers and explorers on the West Coast of the U.S. When Spanish conquistadors landed in San Diego Bay in 1542, the leader of the expedition claimed the whole area for Spain, which was the basis of a major settlement (Alta California) a couple of hundred years later. San Diego was the site of the Mission and Presidio of San Diego, which was created in 1769, and it was the first settlement that Europeans settled. San Diego became a part of Mexico, and it became a U.S. state after the Mexican-American War.
