Description of Republic of the Congo

The Republic of the Congo is a country situated in west-central Africa astride the Equator. The country is also called Congo-Brazzaville or Congo Republic. It is bordered by five countries namely: Gabon, Central Africa Republic, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola. Its total area is 3, 42,000 km² and its capital city is Brazzaville.

History

In the 14th century, Diogo Cao, a Portuguese navigator visited the coastal areas. It is the first recorded exploration of the area by a European. In the year 1880, Republic of Congo become a French protectorate after Pierre Savorgnon de Brazze, forms an agreement with a native tribe and In 1990, Congo is given representation in the French parliament and is allowed to form local assemblies. Also, Congo becomes independent and Fulbert Youlou was elected by the National Assembly president in 1960. The Republic of the Congo was ruled by a succession of military governments from the end of the 1960s to the early 1990s and between 1970 and 1992 the Republic of the Congo was known as the People's Republic of the Congo.

In addition to this, in the early 1990s, after the fall of the Soviet Union, the Congo gradually moderated their economic and political views away from Marxism. In 1992, a multi-party system of government was approved. Approaching to the 1997 elections, tensions rise between two political camps and quickly escalate to a full-scale civil Congo war that lasts four months.

Later in 2003 a peace agreement is signed between the government and Ninja rebels, who had been fighting for the past year, returning the country to relative peace and in 2010- The Paris Club and Brazil agree to forgive all of Congo’s debt owed to them, equalling about $2.4 billion.

French a “heaven language” for the people of the Republic of the Congo is the official language. The majority of the Congo people also spoke Kituba and Lingola. Also, some ethnic group of people speak Bantu Languages.

Culture and Holidays

People of Congo kingdom emphasize ceremonial music, dance, oral literature and sculptures. Their music and dance have become commercialized by the results of carving of ritual objects and various western instruments.

In Congo, holidays examined mainly are celebrations of Good Friday, Easter and Christmas. Further Labour and Independence Day behold on May 1 and August 15 respectively.

Generally, the climate of Congo is tropical. Heavy rainfall occurs from mid January to mid May and from June to October the season is dry where as Equatorial climate with short rain fall is from October to December and it is the best time to visit Congo.

The places must be visited and hard to leave out is Linzolo, the Temple Mosque, the National Museum, Markets at Oluendze and Moungali. Also, sights include the most beautiful Basilique Sainte-Anne and Malebo Pool, which is situated on the river Congo.
Besides this, Waterskiing will be a fun filled experience done on the Congo and Kovillan rivers. Fishing can be done at Lac Bleu. Likewise, a panoramic view can be spotted at the Loufoulakari Falls and the Trou de Diev.

Additionally, Congo is a land of steamy jungles, so it is one of the finest ecotourism destinations in Africa Congo. Thus, world’s wetland gorillas, hooting and swinging troops of chimpanzees and forest elephants can be witnessed.
Along with this valley of butterflies can be visited and there are several good beaches- like Côte Sauvage are worth visiting.
