Pyongyang - description of the city:

Pyongyang is the capital of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), located on the Taedong River. The city is identified as a new administrative unit under the central government. It is the administrative center of the South Pyongyang Province and one of the oldest cities in North Korea. Presumably, it was founded in 1122 B.C. The oldest buildings in the modern Pyongyang date back to the 3rd century A.D. Currently, the city has 2.47 million inhabitants (including suburbs). It is an important transport hub. The capital has the Pyongyang Sunan International Airport and the outer harbor of the South Pyongyang Province. It is a large industrial center of the country. There are ferrous and nonferrous metals, machinery, textiles, food, chemical industry, and production of building materials. The city also has the CHP and a subway. There is North Korea's main coal basin situated near Pyongyang. The city has the Academy of Sciences of Korea, the University, theatres, and museums (including the Museum of the Revolution and the National Art Gallery). Historical and architectural monuments consist of the watchtower (3rd century, rebuilt in the 14th century), the Taedong Gate (3rd century, rebuilt in the 17th century), and the Potong Gate (10th century, rebuilt in the 15th century). The Moranbong Park with its pavilions, pagodas, stone paths, winding among lakes and miniature waterfalls decorate the city of Pyongyang.
