Pretoria - description of the city:

Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa. It is located on the River Apis. The city was founded by the Boers (descendants of immigrants from the Netherlands) in 1855. Since 1860 was the capital of the Transvaal, the state formed by the Boers, who were not satisfied with the orders imposed by the British in South Africa. Since 1910 it became the capital of the South African Union (from 1961 – of South Africa). It is named after Andries Pretorius, a statesman, who, in 1852, gave the independence to Transvaal.

Currently, Pretoria is home to 1.07 million inhabitants. Main industries include machinery, iron and steel, chemical, cement, food processing, and textile industry. There is an international airport. The city has several universities and the South African Academy of Sciences and Arts. The Municipal Art Gallery of Pretoria represents the art of South Africa, and the Museum of Art - Dutch painting of the 17th century. Furthermore, there is the National Historical Museum, the Open air Museum, the Museum of the Transvaal, the exposition of which is devoted to Natural History, and the house-museum of the first South African president Paul Kruger. There is also a beautiful zoo in Pretoria.
