Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa. It is located on the River Apis. The city was founded by the Boers (descendants of immigrants from the Netherlands) in 1855. Since 1860 was the capital of the Transvaal, the state formed by the Boers, who were not satisfied with the orders imposed by the British in South Africa. Since 1910 it became the capital of the South African Union (from 1961 – of South Africa). It is named after Andries Pretorius, a statesman, who, in 1852, gave the independence to Transvaal.

Currently, Pretoria is home to 1.07 million inhabitants. Main industries include machinery, iron and steel, chemical, cement, food processing, and textile industry. There is an international airport.
