Werfen

The little town of Werfen has several interesting churches. St James’s Church is mentioned in 14th-century records, but its present style dates from a 17th-century Baroque conversion. The Marian Church was built in the early 18th century. Environs: There are two fascinating sights near Werfen. Hohenwerfen fortress, built on a rocky outcrop, dates back to the 11th century. Today, it is an interactive museum with many interesting displays, including late- Romanesque frescoes and an exhibition of weapons. It also includes Austria’s first museum of falconry. Eisriesenwelt (giant ice world) is one of the world’s largest cave systems. It has dramatic ice formations and superb ice galleries. Some 42 km (26 miles) have been explored so far. A scenic walk or bus or cable car journey will take you from Werfen to the entrance in the western wall of the Hochkogel peak. Inside it is very cold (so take warm clothes). It is open from May to October.
