Blenio Valley Introduction
The Blenio Valley is located in the northern part of Ticino, and it streches from the Pass of Lukmanier all the way to the Biasca valley. In the summertime, hikers are able to see old villages that are very well-preserved, and there are also treasures of art on the trail, from Biasca over Acuqarossa and on towards Olivone. The valley also has a wide range of cultural sights, and there are a lot of churches and museums worth exploring. So, it’s not just hiking that you’ll be doing while you’re there. You might find yourself doing some cultural exploring as well.
The Lukmanier Pass stretches from the Blenio Valley to Sedrun/Disentis in the Hinterrhein Valley in Graubunden canton. It is passable throughout the year. The valley has roads and routes that have been in use for many centuries. Even though it is in kind of a barren mountain wilderness, the Blenio Valley has a uniquely southern character. There is a tradition of wine-growing in this area. The famers here have done a lot with the valley, and they have really transformed it into beautiful jewel of scenic wonder. If you ever visit there, you should certainly taste some of the delicious specialties that the farmers and eateries have to offer.
The valley has a lot of cultural offerings. The Museum of Blenio in Lottigna is one of them. There is also a museum devoted to chocolate in Dangio. There is a fossil and mineral collection in Semione. You can check out the Donetta Archives in Corzonesco/Casserio. Tourists can also see beautiful works from the Romanesque period in Lombardy, and there is also a chapel at Negrentino.
There are lots of bicycle routes and hiking trails that traverse this picturesque valley. After you spend a lot of time exploring the valley, you will be really prepared for the hike from Olivone to Loderio.
The resort town of Olivone is situated at a really scenic spot at the base of the Sosto, and it is the starting-off point for hiking tours and excursions to the beautiful Val di Campo, as well as to other sites like wasteland on Greina Plateau and the Reservoir Lake at Luzzone.
