Ulvik is located in Norway, and it is a municipality in Hordaland County. The municipality’s boundaries stretch from the mountains to the Hardangerfjord, and the mountains reach up to nearly 6,000 feet above sea level. The administrative hub of the municipality is the town of Ulvik. The towns of Finse and Osa are located in the municipality of Ulvik as well.
The municipality has a population of a little over 1,000, and most of the people in the town of Ulvik live close to the area of Ulvikafjorden. Most of those who do not live in the town of Ulvik live on the farms that surround the village or at the end of the Osafjorden in the town of Osa.
After the union was dissolved between Sweden and Norway in 1905, Ulvik was of a handful of municipalities that wanted a republic instead of a monarchy in a national referendum put to the people on the issue.
The town of Ulvik was almost completely destroyed in 1940, when the Nazis invaded Norway, and fighting happened between the Nazis arriving in boats and Norwegian force on the mainland. A lot of the village was burned down to the ground, and three people were killed. Several German soldiers were killed in the fighting too.
All of the municipalities in Norway, and that includes Ulvik, are responsible for education through the tenth grade, health services, senior citizen services, unemployment and social services, and building municipal roads. The municipality is governed by a council that is elected by the people, and those elected representatives elect a mayor.
The Church of Norway has a single parish in the municipality. It is included in the Hardanger og Voss deanery. It is called Ulvik Church, and it was built in 1859. For tourists that are touring through small Norwegian villages and towns to see the local church architecture, then you shouldn’t miss this church. Any church built in the 1800s in Norway has a distinct architecture and look that you don’t want to forget. Take a digital camera or your iPhone and snap away. It’s not to be missed.
