The Opera House
The Opera House is where the national theater of Norway and the Norwegian National Opera and the Ballet call home. The building is located in the center of Oslo in the Bjorvika neighborhood. Statsbygg, a government agency, is in charge of the venue. The building contains 1100 rooms consisting of 38,500 meters square. The main auditorium can see 1364. There are 2 other performance spaces as well. They seat 200 and 400 people. The main stage of the opera house is 16 meters wide and 40 meters deep. The exterior surfaces are angled and covered with white granite and Italian marble, which makes it look like it is rising out of the water.
Norway’s legislature, after a long debate, decided in the year 1999 to build a new opera house. There was a design competition held and 350 entries were received. The winning firm was Snohetta. Construction of the building began in the year 2003 and the building was completed in the year 2007. A gala opening was held in April of 2008. King Harald and Queen Margrethe II from Denmark attended the event as did President Tarja Halonen from Finland, as well as other leaders. During the first year it was opened 1.3 million people had passed through the doors of the building.
