The Theater Museum offers a history of performing arts and theater. It has been a part of the Oslo Museum department since the year 2006. It was established as a foundation in the year 1972. The precursor to this museum was the Christiania Theater Historical Society, which opened in the year 1939.
Located in Ibsen and Bjornson, theater buffs from around the world flock to the Teatermuseet to view the wonderful theatrical memorabilia that the museum has to offer. Over 150 years’ worth of Oslovian theatrical history is found here. The museum goes through the Christiania Theater’s golden years where many of Ibsen’s plays were seen for the first time. Some of the mementos include costumes and pictures. There are exhibitions that will let you relive the era of vaudeville and the circus as well as the puppet theater.
The museum offers recordings of some of the highlights of the theatrical history of Norway, including some of the most celebrated artists of the country. There is a large ballet costume collection as well as portraits of each of the actors. You should plan on spending at least an hour or two in the museum if you want to see it all.
