Sainte-Croix Introduction

Sainte-Croix is located in the Jura-Nord Vaudois district, and this municipality is located in the Vaud Canton of Switzerland. It has a population of roughly 4,600. 

Sainte-Croix sits on a sunny terrace in the Lake Geneva region, and specifically in the Jura landscape. The area is world-famous for its nickelodeons and musical events. Cycling and hiking in the natural surroundings is popular in the summer. In the winter, the region is a popular cross-country skiing destination.

Geography

When it was measured in 2009, Sainte-Croix had an area of about 15 square miles. Of this space, about six square miles (or 41%) is for agriculture, while about 7.5 square miles (or about 50%) is covered in forest. Of the remaining land, about one square mile (or 7%) is developed, and less than 1% is either lakes or rivers. About 20% is unproductive land.

Sainte-Croix had an area, when the data was collected in 2009, of about 15 square miles. Of the remaining land, about one square mile (or 7%) is developed (roads or buildings). 

Of the area that has been developed, buildings and houses make up about 4% and infrastructure related to transportation accounts for about 3%. Out of the forest-covered land, about 46% of the area is heavy forest and about 4% is little tree clusters and orchards. Of the land for agriculture, about 1% is for crops and 21% is for pastures.

Demographics 

When the data was collected in 2012, Sainte-Croix had a population of about 4,660. When the data was collected in 2008, about 15% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last ten years the population has changed at about an 8% rate. 

Most of the population is French-speaking (about 90%), and the second most common language is German (about 2%). Italian is the third most common language (about 2%).

Religion 

When the data was collected in 2000, about 21% of the population was Roman Catholic, and about 53% were members of the Swiss Reformed Church.

Sport 

In the wintertime, Sainte-Croix is a very popular winter sports destination.
