Riehen is located in the Basel-Stadt Canton, and this municipality has about 21,000 people living there. Along with the city of Bettingen and Basel, Riehen is one of the three municipalities that is located there.
Riehen is the site of the Fondation Beyeler (which is a world famous art gallery). It is also an internationally renowned toy museum.
Riehen was the very first municipality in the country to elect a woman to political office, and it did so in 1958.
When it was measured in 2009, Riehen had a population of about four square miles. Out of this total area, about one square mile (or 26%) is put to use for agriculture, while a little over one square mile (or about 25%) is covered in forest. Out of the remainder of the land, about two square miles (or 48%) is settled, and about 2% is either lakes or rivers.
Of the area that is built up, houses and buildings make up about 28% and infrastructure related to transportation makes about 8%. Parks, sports fields, and green belts make up about 11%. Out of the forest-covered land, 24% of it is heavily forested and about 1.5% is full of little tree clusters and small orchards. Of the land that is put to use for agriculture, about 14% is for crops and 7% is for pastures.
When it was measured in 2014, Riehen had a population of roughly 21,000. When it was measured in 2008, about 18% of the population was foreign nationals from other countries. Over the last ten years the population hasn’t changed at a very significant rate.
The majority of the population is German-speaking (about 91%), and French is the 2nd most common language (about 2%). Italian is the 3rd most common language (about 2%).

There are several Swiss heritage sites of national significance in Riehen, and they include the Formed Village Church, the Village Museum and Toy Museum, the Colnaghni House, and the Cemetery am Hornli with the old crematorium there. There are plenty of sites to see when you’re in Riehen, and you should take some time to visit the other municipalities in the canton too. There is a lot to see in this area of Switzerland.
