Rauland is a part of Vest-Telemark, a traditional region in Norway. It used to be a municipality of Telemark county. It was created in the year 1860 from the districts of Oyfjell located in Lardal and Rauland which is in Vinje as a way to adjust the borders in the area.
The gorgeous lake Totakvatnet is surrounded by mountains. This area is well known for the buildings located here that are extremely well preserved. It is also known for its unique culture. There are many artists who have strong ties with this little lakeside village.
The Rauland Kunstmuseum offers displays of drawings, paintings, and sculptures from artists from the area. The museum includes works by Dyre Vaa, who lived from 1903 until 1980 and is quite famous.
Just east of the town there is a number of historical buildings. This includes many old farm houses that are located near Krossen. There are also some at Austbogrenda. One of the farm houses offers wood carvings that were done during the 1820s.
There are other collections of buildings made out of wood as well, including a sawmill from the 1820s. these are located on Lognvik farm, which is near lake Lognvikvatnet. The Myllarheimen cottage is located at the western end of Totakvatnet. This is where Tarjei Agundson resided. He was a fiddler virtuoso. There are times in the summer months where folk music is performed.
