Petit Palais Introduction
The Musee du Petit Palais is located in a gorgeous mansion that was created in the Second Empire in the early 1860s. The Petit Palais actually opened up in 1868, and it has a great collection of drawings, sculptures, and paintings that are quite essential to the history of modern art. It has pieces that are representative of major trends from the 1870s to the 1930s, and there are works by masters like Cezanne, Utrillo, Degas, and Mane-Katz. There is a special emphasis on the Impressionist painters that were part of the School of Paris.
Unfortunately, the Petit Palais in Geneva has been closed down for several years. It was at one time a charming and beautiful venue for art in the city of Geneva. It is unclear why it closed down, but it could have been because safety standards were not met or because the budget was too high, or something like that. The cost to repair the building might have been too high, and it was a privately owned building.
Some of the major artists in the collection include Louis Valtat, Maximilien Luce, Francis Picabia, Emile-Othon Friesz, and Armand Guillaumin.
