Zurich Opera House Introduction
The Zurich Opera House – not surprisingly – is an opera house located in the city of Zurich in Switzerland. It has been the place where the Zurich opera has played for more than 120 years.
The very first theater that was permanent, the Aktientheater, was developed in 1834 and it turned into the focus of the activities of Richard Wagner throughout his “exile” period, when he was exiled from the country of Germany.
This place was burnt to the ground in 1890. There was a new Stadttheater Zurich that was developed by architects from Vienna, and they changed their former design for the theater just a little bit. It was then opened in 1891. It was the main performance area in the city for musical events, opera, and drama until 1925, when it was then named Opernhaus Zurich and another theater for plays was developed.
The Opernhaus was in need of some big renovations in the 1970s. When some people said that it was not worth restoring, a new theater was recommended for the site. However, in the early 1980s, the rebuilding took place, but there was a ton of local opposition, and there were even street riots. The theater that was rebuilt was inaugurated with a piece from Wagner.
Since it has been restored, the theater is beautifully decorated building, and it has a neo-classical façade of grey and white stoned adorned with busts of classical composers like Mozart, Wagner, and Weber. Furthermore, busts of Goethe, Shakespeare, and Schiller can be seen there. The auditorium is built in a neo-rococo style, and it can seat about 1200 people. Throughout the refurbishment, the problem of sightlines was not really addressed. Because of this, the theater has a large number of seats that have a limited view, or hardly any view, of the stage. This is odd in international comparison, because sightlines in historic opera houses have usually been enhanced over time.
The Zurich Opera House is an important tourist destination, and you should see it if you are in the city. Be sure to take lots of pictures of the architecture, the face of the building, and the ornate décor. Take pictures of the beautiful interior as well. You can tell your friends that you’ve seen an opera house in the city of Zurich, in the country of Switzerland, and they will be impressed that you have ascended to the pinnacle of class, sophistication, elegance, and culture.
