Olten

Where Is Olten?

Olten is a small town in the Solothum canton in Switzerland, and it is also the capital of the district of Olten.

Olten has a railway station that is located within half an hour of Lucerne, Basel, Bern, and Zurch by train, and it is a major railway hub of Switzerland. If you want to visit the major cities of Switzerland, but you want to see what a quaint and picturesque Swiss village has to offer as well, then consider making your way to Olten and traveling out to the other major Swiss cities from the railway station. It’s a good plan to see the best of both worlds.

Sites Of National Significance

There are a handful of heritage sites of national significance in Olten. The Old City, which entails a Roman era vicus and medieval and early modern developments as well, the Train Station, and the prehistoric hilltop settlement of Dickenbannli are all important sites of national significance. The covered bridge that goes across the Aare River and the Naturmuseum are also listed as sites of national significance. The whole town of Olten is included in the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites.

You can look at pictures of the Old City of Olten, the Train Station, and Olten’s covered bridge online – but nothing compares to seeing them in person. Whenever you visit a small Swiss town or municipality, make sure that you have a list of the sites of national and cultural significance – because those sites are highly educational and will offer a window back into the past. These sites are listed as important sites of national significance for a reason, and you should take a guidebook along on your trip to Switzerland so that you don’t miss a single one. There will usually be information on the site at the site, but your guidebook might have supplementary information.

Culture

There is a major firework show every year on August 1st, and there are boats that float down the river. It is also the site of a wooden foot bridge, and it is one of the big landmarks in the town. Make sure that you grab a bite at the railway station restaurant, the Gruppe Olten. The Gruppe Olten translates to the Olten Group in English, and it was founded in honor of a group of writers. The Swiss Alpine Club was founded in that same year, 1863.
