Nordfjord, which translates to Northern fjord – as opposed to Sunnfjord, is in Norway, and it is one of the traditional districts there. The area is located in the northern area of Sogn og Fjordane County in the area of Norway referred to as Northern Norway. It is around the Nordfjorden, and the area includes Stryn, Hornindal, Gloppen, Eid, Bremanger, Vagsoy, and Selje. All of these are municipalities in Norway. The region of Nordfjord covers an area of approximately 1,700 square miles, and it has a population of roughly 33,000.
Nordfjord is the 6th longest fjord in Norway, and it stretches roughly 66 miles from Husevagoy island at the mouth of the town of Loen at the other side. The area entails the Stadlandet peninsula coastline to the Jostedalsbreen, and that is the biggest mainland glacier in all of Europe. The region also entails lake Hornindalsvatnet, which is the deepest lake in Europe at roughly 1,700 feet below sea level. Briksdalsbreen glacier is especially scenic. The Stryn region has a year-round invitation to all people (locals and tourists alike) for alpine skiing – but you’ll have to pay in some places. There are a number of small fishing communities that are set along the fjord, and they date all the way back to before the Vikings.
There are many fjords in Norway, but this is one of the longest ones. There are a number of natural sights to see in this district: glaciers, coastline, lakes, peninsulas, villages, etc. The deepest lake in Europe is quite a sight. The glacier is absolutely gorgeous, and even though there are other glaciers in Norway, you don’t want to miss Briksdalsbreen. Remember, the skiing is year-round, so take advantage of that alpine skiing whenever you’re in Nordfjord. There are several fishing communities, and there are some delicious meals that you can order at local restaurants and cafes. The seafood is especially delicious, and the locals are warm and friendly. Anywhere in Norway where there are fishing villages, there is plenty of tasty seafood. Be sure to have some of the delicious seafood at one of these small local diners.
