Moss is an important trading and industrial center for Ostfold County. The town is very well known for the art galleries that are found throughout the area. In addition, the streets of Moss are lined with sculptures. The harbor has been a junction for boat traffic for a long time and today there are car ferries that travel between Horten and Moss on a regular basis.
Located by og-Industrimuseum, the Town and Industry museet shows the industrial development of Moss. In 1778, the Konventionsgarden was constructed. The main building, Moss Ironworks, was built in the middle of the 18th century. It was at this location where in 1814, the Moss Convention was signed. This ratified the union of Norway with Sweden instead of Denmark.
On the west side of Moss is Jeloy island. The island was once a peninsula, but a canal that was dug disconnected the island from the mainland. However, this did not deter houses from being built during the 1960s. There is a manor house located on Alby God’s estate that is the home of an art gallery and the Refsnes Gods now offers a hotel for visitors.
In the northern part of the city there is a wonderful harbor village. This is a popular place for excursions. The buildings in the center of this area offer an eco-museum, exhibitions, a museum harbor, and many great places to eat.
