Maison Tavel

Maison Tavel Introduction

Maison Tavel is the oldest private building in the city of Geneva, and it is a wonderful testimony of the civil architecture of the medieval period.

Maison Tavel offers a nice testimony of civil architecture from the medieval period, in the country of Switzerland. It was completely ruined by a fire in the early 1300s, but the Tavel family recreated it, and they were part of the nobility of Geneva at the time. Because they rebuilt it, it looks like an urban palace and a fortified mansion in one. Very wealthy and powerful families owned it over the next several centuries, and it was bought by the City of Geneva in 1963, and they completely restored the building after that. It was turned into a museum in the mid-1980s, and it provided visitors with the chance to learn about how the city evolved and different aspects of the former life of its residents.

Maison Tavel is an unmissable sight if you’re on a tour of the city of Geneva. Be sure to check out the other examples of medieval architecture and the parks and islands while you’re there. Geneva is one of the most picturesque and interesting cities in Switzerland.
