Leysin has a population of about 4,000. Leysin is located in the Vaud Canton, and it is in the district of Aigle. It is a municipality. It was first described in historical records as Leissins in 1231, and then it was written about as Leisins in 1352.
Leysin is located in the Alps of Vaudoises, and it is a fun little alpine resort town on Lake Geneva, on the eastern end of it. It is close to Montreaux, Geneva, and Lausanne. In past years, Leysin was well known for its sanatoriums that were created for the treatment of tuberculosis. Right now, it has spectacular Alpine views over the Rhone Valley looking to the Dents du Midi. There are recreational activities and mountain sports all year round.
The whole village of Leysin and the Veyges hamlet are classified as a Swiss heritage site.
Leysin has a total area, when it was measured in 2009, of about 7 square miles. Out of this total area, about 2.5 square miles (or 35%) is put to use for agriculture, and about 2.7 square miles (or 37%) is covered in forest. Out of the remainder of the land, less than half of a square mile (or 8%) is settled (roads or buildings), 10 acres (or less than half of a percent) is either lakes or rivers), and about 1.5 square miles (or 20%) is unproductive land.
Of the area that is built up, buildings and housing make up about 4.5% and infrastructure for transportation makes up about 2%. Out of the land that is covered in forest, 33% of the whole land area is covered in heavy forest and 3.5% is covered with little clusters of trees and orchards. Out of the land that is put to use for agriculture, 10% is for pastures and about 25% is for alpine pastures. 100% of the water in the municipality is flowing. Of the area that is unproductive, about 13% is unproductive vegetation and about 7% is just too rocky for vegetation to grow.
The municipality is located in the district of Aigle, and it is on the Grande-Eau’s right side at the foot of the Tour de Mayen and the Tour d’Ai. The primary town is situated at a height of roughly 4,100 feet. It consists of the villages of Mayen, Ai, Feydy, and Vegyes, and the village of Leysin.
